The Government announces a National Plan for the expansion of the Electric Transmission System
On May 29, 2025, the Government announced the launch of a National Plan for Electric Transmission Expansion Works (the “Plan“). The Plan will contemplate the construction of 5,610 km of new high-voltage lines (132 kV and 500 kV) and transformer stations throughout the country, within the framework of the energy sector emergency declared in December 2023 and the 2024-2026 Contingency Plan to mitigate bottlenecks, reduce supply cuts and guarantee the capacity of the Argentine Interconnection System (“SADI”, for its acronym in Spanish). It is estimated that the investments required by the Plan would reach USD 6,600 million.
In this regard, the Ministry of Energy identified 17 “urgent and priority” projects, based on the recommendations made by the Electric Transport Commission:

- AMBA II + STATCOM Rodríguez (Buenos Aires)
- 500 kV Vivoratá – Plomer Line (Buenos Aires)
- 500 kV Plomer – O’Higgins Line (Buenos Aires)
- 500 kV Puerto Madryn – Choele Choel (Río Negro) – Bahía Blanca (Buenos Aires) Line
- Comodoro Rivadavia Oeste 500/132 kV – 450 MVA (Chubut)
- EAST Alternative 500 kV Santa Cruz River – Puerto Madryn Line
- WEST Alternative 500 kV Kirchner – Futaleufú – Piedra del Águila (Santa Cruz, Chubut and Neuquén) Line
- 500 kV Río Diamante (Mendoza) – Charlone – O’Higgins (Buenos Aires) Line
- 500 kV Rodeo – Chaparro – La Rioja Sur Line
- 500 kV Malvinas – San Francisco (Córdoba) – Santo Tomé (Santa Fe) Line
- ET El Espinillo 500/132 kV (Formosa)
- 500 kV Lavalle – Chumbicha (Catamarca) Line
- 500 kV Chaparro – Antofagasta de la Sierra (Catamarca) – Punta – Cobos (Salta) Line
- 500 kV International Interconnection Line Yaguaca (Bolivia) – Salvador Mazza (Salta) – San Juancito (Jujuy)
- 500 kV International Interconnection Line Villa Hayes (Paraguay) – Formosa
- 500 kV Interconnection Santa Cruz – Tierra del Fuego Line
The infrastructure expansion will be financed and executed by private companies, through the works concession mechanism. These projects will be solved through the payment of tariffs by the users who benefit from the new infrastructure.
